Season 1 was produced in 2017 and aimed to capture compelling Canadian narratives aligning with Canada’s 150th birthday. The six episodes included a partnership with Calgary Arts Development about music, Indigenous culture, Beakerhead, and many others. The other episodes included Shambalah’s 20th anniversary (Canada’s longest running electronic music festival), the inspiring journey of Sudanese rapper Samuel Mijok Lang (known as Hot Dogg), and the experiences of two young boys managing seizures, which showcased the potential benefits of medical cannabis. The episodes were submitted to TELUS Optik TV VOD.
Season two went into production in 2019 and carried on into 2020. The spirit behind Season 2 was Canada’s energy story, past, present, and future. This season featured a spectrum of interviews representing diverse political viewpoints about the energy transition. It was important to also acknowledge Canada’s rich oil and gas history in the context of this season, and openly discuss the polarized debate about climate change. In addition to some fantastic experts, and beautiful B roll and Alberta scenery, this season also talked about mental health and Matt Keay’s personal journey.
Beyond the storytelling opportunity, Season 2 was produced and edited in a way to distribute it into one-minute short videos on Instagram and YouTube to satisfy modern audiences and experiment with the effectiveness of short form video.
What we can expect in Season 3 is a substantial increase in production quality, marketing, distribution, and overall attention to the series. The current brand partners are some of the most innovative companies not just in Canada, but on Earth. As this season progresses, more partners will come in and we aim to maintain our editorial and journalistic integrity to ensure that we satisfy WeMaple’s documentary storytelling principle. We will do this by adhering to the guidelines set out by the Canadian Audio-Visual Certification Office.
It’s going to be fun!
The WeMaple Video Show is both a podcast and video show on YouTube designed to support Business on Camera (BOC) and WeMaple in building effective teams, team management and leadership and streamlining our ability to connect with brand partners and members of the community in a new and unique way. The documentary series is a much more sophisticated, high-profile, and high-production value. It will be a true documentary storytelling project that will consist of six 20-minute films that will go on traditional broadcast on TELUS Optik TV VOD. It will also be distributed online depending on the promotion plan for that particular film. You can follow us on social media @wemapleofficial on Instagram and find us on YouTube (@wemaplecanada) as well.
Since 2010, BOC has independently fundraised and produced 17 documentary film projects in collaboration with the federal government, provincial government and other partners. Recently, WeMaple has been incorporated in the Province of Alberta as a single-purpose corporation under the name 2526858 Alberta Ltd. with the sole purpose of producing WeMaple Season 3 as an independent entity.
While BOC is the official promoter of WeMaple Season 3, you’ll notice many of the team members support both BOC and WeMaple. We’ve found that the synergy between the two organizations produces extraordinary results as a team.
