WeMaple Exploring Documentary about Agriculture

Business on Camera (BOC) is eager to explore a documentary series that narrates the modern challenges and adaptations within the agriculture industry.

In a world racing to feed an estimated 9 billion people by 2050, agriculture faces multifaceted challenges as it aims to adapt to global changes using modern research and technologies.

While some argue that food distribution is the primary problem, Olds College academics argue that it’s intricately tied to how we produce our food. Agriculture contributes approximately 25 percent of global emissions, which underscores the need to address both what and how we produce food. Furthermore, there’s a pressing need to bridge the knowledge gap among policymakers to formulate effective solutions.

According to Statistics Canada, agriculture is grappling with a dwindling workforce; a mere 1.7 percent of the Canadian population is currently involved in primary agriculture, with a projected job gap of 232,000 people by 2030. The next generation, raised away from farms, cannot easily fill this void.

Olds College, a key institution specializing in agriculture, can play a pivotal role as a thought leader and a recruitment hub for the industry’s future. Through data-driven analytics and research, growing interest in small-scale organic farming, environmental responsibility, and fair labour practices can be optimized. Furthermore, by harnessing data and robotics, farmers can enhance yields and reduce emissions, fine-tuning practices to suit specific crops and livestock in diverse environments.

BOC will begin investigating these stories, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts to address these challenges comprehensively.
