Calgary-based startup EnviCore has raised $4.2 million in seed funding to develop a technology that can reduce cement production’s carbon footprint by up to 30 percent.
EnviCore produces supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) using recycled materials like mining waste and recycled concrete, which can replace up to 35 percent of traditional concrete mixes and reduce cement production’s carbon footprint by up to 30 percent.
The funding round, backed by investors such as CSN Inova Ventures, Heidelberg Materials, and Techstars, will enable EnviCore to scale up production, enhance R&D, and explore new business development opportunities. The company plans to collaborate with Heidelberg Materials on a feasibility study for a pilot SCM production facility, reinforcing Calgary’s position as a leader in sustainable construction innovation.
Shahrukh Shamim, CEO and Co-Founder of EnviCore described the investment as a turning point for the company, enabling them to bring their innovative technology to market. Echoing this optimism, Edvaldo Rabelo, Cement Director at CSN, emphasized that the partnership is a key step toward cutting carbon emissions across their cement, steel, and mining operations. Together, these efforts signal a strong push for decarbonization in heavy industries.
As the construction industry works to meet global decarbonization goals, Calgary stands to benefit economically and environmentally, as EnviCore’s expansion reinforces the city’s role in advancing sustainable building solutions.
