A Pan-Canadian Electricity Project: Powering a Sustainable Future

Imagine a future where the lights in your home are powered by clean energy from across the country: wind from Alberta, solar from Ontario, hydro from Quebec, and geothermal from every province. That future is already in motion. A new Pan-Canadian electricity initiative is aiming to knit together the country’s provincial grids into a cohesive, green powerhouse.

Canada already leads globally in clean electricity, with over 80 percent of our power coming from non-emitting sources. But each province still largely operates its grid in isolation. The Pan-Canadian project aims to connect the dots, building new infrastructure to move electricity across provinces, balancing supply and demand from coast to coast. When one  region has extra power, it can help power homes in provinces where demand is peaking.

As many of the new transmission routes cross Indigenous lands, Indigenous communities are at the forefront of this project. Local communities will be actively designing, owning, and leading parts of this grid transformation. It’s a model rooted in partnership and respect.

A connected grid will have multiple benefits. It will mean more resilience during storms and heatwaves, fewer emissions from fossil fuel backups, and more reliable energy for growing industries. It also means that no province has to tackle the climate challenge alone. The energy transition becomes a shared effort, with shared rewards.

Imagine Quebec’s hydro helping back up Saskatchewan’s solar. Or British Columbia’s water power making its way to the Yukon. This is how we meet net-zero targets without sacrificing reliability or affordability.

Pieces of this project are already in motion. Provinces are discussing agreements and feasibility studies are mapping the terrain. Shovels will follow. It’s a long road, but every kilometre of new line brings us closer to a future where clean, affordable, and reliable electricity has become Canada’s goal— and like all big ideas in Canada, it only works if we do it together.
