WeMaple Announces Canadian Gas Association as Brand Partner, Advancing a National Story on Energy Security in Rural and Indigenous Communities

CALGARY, Alberta – April 28, 2026 – WeMaple has confirmed the Canadian Gas Association (CGA) as an official Brand Partner for WeMaple Special Presentation Part I, a documentary production advancing through Alberta’s Film and Television Tax Credit (FTTC) Program under the province’s Jobs, Economy, Trade and Immigration (JET) division.

The Canadian Gas Association and the natural gas delivery industry will be featured as part of the documentary’s broader narrative exploring energy security in rural and Indigenous communities across Canada — with a focus on the realities of extending infrastructure to regions that have historically been underserved. The film will examine how geography, policy, and investment frameworks have shaped uneven access to reliable and affordable energy, and the implications this has on housing, economic development, and quality of life.

Through this collaboration, the project will incorporate perspectives from natural gas infrastructure companies working alongside stakeholders to advance natural gas access for Indigenous and rural communities..

The documentary will place a strong emphasis on early engagement with community and Indigenous leaders — reflecting a growing recognition that meaningful engagement must be built into project design, not added after the fact.

“Many rural and Indigenous communities across Canada still lack access to reliable and affordable energy, not because of a lack of demand, but because of the structural and regulatory challenges tied to infrastructure development,” said Paul Cheliak, Vice President, Strategy and Delivery at the Canadian Gas Association. “This project is an opportunity to bring greater awareness to those gaps, while highlighting the partnerships and practical solutions that can help connect more communities and support long-term economic and social outcomes.”

“Indigenous representation has been a consistent and important part of our filmmaking across Canada,” said Matt Keay, Founder of WeMaple. “We’re committed to ensuring that Indigenous history, land, and culture are respectfully and meaningfully represented — not just acknowledged, but integrated into the story in a way that reflects their importance to Canada’s past, present, and future.”

“Energy security is directly tied to economic opportunity, housing, and overall quality of life in many Indigenous communities,” said Guy Lonechild, CEO of the First Nations Power Authority. “The challenge has never been a lack of interest from communities — it’s been the structural and regulatory barriers that limit connectivity. This project is an important step in bringing those realities forward, while also highlighting the leadership and partnerships emerging to move solutions ahead for First Nations and rural communities across Canada.  Let’s make life affordable for all Canadians that include First Nations and Indigenous communities in rural and remote Canada as our new superpower.”

Participation as a Brand Partner reflects CGA’s role in advancing dialogue around energy security, infrastructure development, and community connectivity — contributing subject-matter expertise to the documentary’s narrative while maintaining WeMaple’s editorial independence.

WeMaple Special Presentation Part I builds on the foundation of the WeMaple series and represents a continued evolution toward storytelling that connects industry, communities, and public understanding around critical national issues.
