Story Summary

Imagine trying to power an island in the middle of the ocean. That’s the challenge the islands of Hawaii face every day. In this episode, we dive into how Hawaii’s power grid was built, how it functions today, and how it deals with issues like storms, lack of fuel, and the push towards renewables. We will explore the history of energy generation in Hawaii with interviews from experts in the industry to get on-the-ground perspectives. We will speak to locals about their views on the energy industry in Hawaii, how it’s working, and how it could potentially hurt the sacred land. We will end with a geothermal perspective on how geothermal energy could potentially be the clean energy source of Hawaii in the future. We will speak to guests at the Geothermal Rising conference in Hawaii and the CEO of Geothermal Rising, Bryant Jones, to get his perspective on how geothermal could power Hawaii in the future.

Story Objective

To educate and entertain the audience with an interesting story of the energy sector in one of the world’s most remote groups of islands. We will use perspectives from local energy experts, energy executives, local advocates, and conference attendees to tell the Hawaiian energy story. We intend to leave viewers with a better understanding of how the energy sector works in Hawaii and how energy could be generated in the ‘Hawaii of the future,’ instilling a sense of hope that a fully renewable Hawaii is possible.
